Q: How do I get Salus housing?
Adults with a severe and persistent mental illness interested in Salus housing should fill out an Ottawa Supportive Housing Application Form and return the completed form to:

*Application forms must be submitted in person or by mail. Faxed applications will not be accepted.*
Applicants will then meet with a Salus representative to ensure that they meet all eligibility criteria. If the applicant meets all the criteria, their name will be added to the waiting list which at this point can be up to five years.
Q: what Are the requirements for qualifying for Salus housing?
In order to qualify for supportive housing with Salus, the person applying must:
- Have a severe and persistent mental illness
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or have refugee status
- Have a mental health support worker who will provide long-term portable and flexible services.
Q: How long does it take to get Salus Housing?
The demand for affordable and clean supportive housing for adults with mental illness is extremely high in the Ottawa area. At present, the waiting period for a supportive housing unit is anywhere from 3-5 years. Salus is constantly looking for way to increase the housing units available.
Q: How much is the rent?
A tenant’s rent is set based on his/her income. A tenant on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) pays $479, per month whereas a tenant on Ontario Works (OW) pays $376. This is the shelter allowance component of their income maintenance program. Tenants with other sources of income have their rent set at either 30% of their income, or market rent.
Q: How do I receive case management services?
Adults with a serious mental illness interested in case management can request services or be referred. A referral form can be downloaded by clicking here, picked up at the Salus’ head office or through the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Q: How long does it take to start receiving Case management?
An intake worker will contact new applicants for case management upon receipt of a completed referral form. Because of the high demand for the service, however, there is an average waiting period of 3 years to be assigned a case manager.
